GREEN POWER

The project is inspired by today’s need to seek earth-friendly renewable energy sources.

The ceramic mural measures 60 x 10 feet. This mural is comprised of two materials: ceramic and wood. The ceramic component is made of 640 unique glazed tiles of different sizes. The tiles form large circles of varying diameters that have abstract, geometric reliefs that evoke movement and rotation. On top of these ceramic circles are the blades of windmills
fabricated in wood. The juxtaposition of these materials and elements will capture the magical harmony and dynamic energy that windmills emanates when they move in synchronicity across a field.

Because the hallway is a relatively narrow interior space, there isn ’t much depth of visual field between the observer and the mural. Therefore, it was critical to design the piece such that the scale and volume of the work doesn’t invade, overwhelm or intrude the space. The design specifically aims to create the sense of a new expanse of space.  I do this through several techniques. The first is by using bas-relief. In addition, I choose a palette of greens and include multiple patterns and rich textures.  All of this serves to convert the mural into a visual experience that invites people to explore the piece up close including being able to touch it. My hope is that the close proximity will foster an intimate relationship between the piece and the students and become an ongoing source for visual and tactile exploration.  The piece will be an integral part of the students’ daily travels and landscape.

My aim is that the artistic landscape will be an appreciated pause between classes or on their way to their activities.  Ultimately, the piece serves to inspire reflection about the future landscape of the city.
